Tax returns are part of every freelance journalists year. The 31st of January can cause some to panic, especially if you are new to freelancing.
There are so many questions around what can you claim for with expenses? When should you start doing your return? Can you pay in installments? Should you get an accountant or do it yourself?
There's a lot to think about and this quick session will hep you answer some of the most pressing questions before the deadline date.
This session will be run by Andrew Subramaniam and Barry Kernon. They’re part of HW Fisher, a top 30 UK chartered accountancy firm.
They offer specialist advice to help reduce people’s tax burden and help them meet their financial goals. Due to the nature of creative work, many of their clients have fluctuating finances. They can help manage financial expectations and advise on how to remain financially stable.
Andrew Subramaniam is Partner in the firm and head of HW Fisher’s industry-leading authors and journalists team.
Many of his clients are best-selling authors or household names in the media world, while others are at an early phase of their careers. No matter what stage a client is at, his goal is always to make a significant contribution to their financial security and prosperity by minimising their tax liability.
A great highlight of his career was being asked by Levi Roots to write a chapter for his book outlining the work he did for him to manage his finances when he was first setting up his business. Levi remains a client; “it’s always very satisfying to be involved with someone’s business from the very start and to see them go on to become successful.”
Barry Kernon is an accounting and tax consultant advising media clients at HW Fisher.
He works with many authors, journalists, artists, musicians, producers, directors and others in the media world, and specialise in the tax treatment of individuals in the creative industries. He has many years’ experience of providing specialist advice in tax planning, reducing tax liabilities, including the use of limited companies and strategic business advice, as well as accounts preparation. I advise clients on all tax matters, including VAT.
He is Honorary Treasurer of the Society of Authors and was once nominated to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his many years of service.
